Crépuscule d’automne, Baie St. Paul is a subtle representation of autumn in the Charlevoix region. Painted around 1923, the pochade shows a house set against a field in fall colours, with a distant forest in the background. Created during an extended period when Gagnon stayed in Baie-Saint-Paul, between 1919 and 1924, this work exemplifies his focus on the natural landscape and his ability to capture the essence of rural Quebec. Gagnon’s years in this region were marked by his exploration of both its terrain and its people, resulting in a lasting legacy of small, evocative landscape paintings.
