Francis Hans (Frank, Franz) Johnston is best known for his landscapes of northern Ontario, of which, “Where the Forest Murmurs” is a magnificent example. It is a symphony of light and colour, and a true celebration of autumn in Canada. These sous bois compositions are among Johnston’s most recognizable and representative.
In 1920, Johnson had been a founding member of the Group of Seven, the group of artists who sought to create a uniquely Canadian art as a contribution to the nation’s developing identity. He resigned from the Group in 1924 and pursued successful careers both as an artist, as well as an art educator.
