Jean-Paul Mousseau was a founding member of the Automatistes and a signatory to its 1948 manifesto, Refus Global, which rejected the dominating influence of the Church in society and called for greater freedom of expression. This is an extraordinarily rare and outstanding Mousseau painting from that critical year. The Automatistes were arguably Canada’s first group to be at the vanguard of artistic developments globally.

National Film Board of Canada (NFB) commissioner Claude Jolicoeur spoke of Grant Munro to Fred Lanigan of the Toronto Globe and Mail. “Grant Munro was a Canadian animation legend…. part of the first generation of young animators that Norman McLaren hired, trained and worked with, as the NFB was starting up in the early 1940s.” [1]. Langan continued writing that when McLaren was visiting the Ontario College of Art on a recruitment tour of art schools for his animation group at the NFB, Group of Seven member Franklin Carmichael “insisted he meet Grant Munro.” [2] Quoting a colleague of Munro’s in McLaren’s animation department, “Norman saw something in Grant, and he went on to be his greatest collaborator.” [3]
