Private collection, Montreal, a childhood friend of John Little
Lafontaine Park remains one of Montreal’s important urban green spaces. Located east of Mount Royal, it was developed in the early 20th Century with the addition of a zoo and greenhouses. Until a few years prior to Little’s painting there was a walking bridge over the lake called “Lover’s Bridge” and, as the accompanying drawing shows, one could go out on the lake aboard row boats available for rent or board a paddle boat.
City parks, Lafontaine Park and the park offered by Mount Royal as examples, share a hugely important history for urban dwellers in the decades preceding the development of an infrastructure that facilitated access by car to “the country” for recreation.
