The Robinson we are presently offering is a fine painting executed in confident terms of impressionism, perhaps bordering on a pointillist or tachist technique. As is common among artists of that creative interest, Robinson finds water as composition to explore. Strictly as an observation, it would be an interesting comparison to see a Lismer or two of the WWI generation beside this Robinson in order to better judge just how developed Robinson was at this stage in his career.
The scene is not specifically identified by Robinson. However, the Robinson bears labels from two galleries where it has previously been sold claiming the location is of a mill in Baie St Paul, neither being of the period of the life of the artist. There is a sister picture by Robinson, not quite a twin, but not far off, that was in the market almost 10 years ago, a painting formerly in the celebrated Edmonton collection of Ernest E. Poole, which was sold by Montreal's Watson Art Gallery entitled, “The Mill, St Jovite” and was dated on the front 1907. Insofar as William Watson did sell Robinson paintings for Albert Robinson, one would think it is a safe hypothesis to believe that Watson’s label is accurate.
