— This precious jewel-like sketch shows Jean Palardy at his best. It is only the most confident and competent hand that is able to say so much with such an economy of brush work. On the smallest of painting surfaces Palardy has successfully implied a vista that resonates the painterly attraction Charlevoix held for Palardy and his wife Jori Smith in the day. Stylistically Palardy’s sketch shows him with traces of James Morrice salted with the best of Albert Robinson and a look at the work of his colleague Clarence Gagnon.
Jean Palardy was an artist, a filmmaker with the National Film Board of Canada, a historian and author of Les Meubles anciens du Canada français, an authoritative book on antique Quebec furniture.
Palardy and his newly wedded wife, fellow artist Jori Smith spent a great part of the years 1930- 1940 living in Charlevoix County, in St. Urbain and elsewhere Jori Smith recollects those experiences in Charlevoix County, 1930. In the Preface, Jori Smith briefly described why those years 1930-1940 were important. “They [the residents] were living exactly as in the eighteenth, seventeenth centuries, like their parents and like their grandparents... away, isolated up in the mountains, where we spent two winters just with the people, living as they lived... we were the only ones who did this. The war and the advent of radio abruptly and drastically changed this way of life forever.”
For over a century now the Charlevoix region has attracted among the foremost artists active in Quebec. The most celebrated is of course Clarence Gagnon, a master of an interpretation of Impressionism who had a home in Baie St. Paul. George Pepper and his wife Kathleen Daly Pepper, (George & Kathleen Daly Pepper built a home in St. Urbain) A.Y. Jackson, Albert Robinson, Frederick Banting, Fred Hutchison, Randolph Hewton, Robert Pilot, René Richard, Jean Palardy, Jori Smith and Claude Le Sauteur are other important talents whose names are synonymous with Charlevoix.
