— Albert Franck was Toronto’s most important urban painter. This scene looks up Webster towards Hazelton Avenue, in Toronto’s prestigious Yorkville neighbourhood, and is right around the corner from Franck’s 90 Hazelton address. The painting was originally purchased from Roberts Gallery by residents of 101 Hazelton, the yellow house which can be seen on the right hand side of the work. While that house has since been replaced, old photographs survive. Those who know the Yorkville of Franck’s era recall its exotic flair rather than luxury boutiques, high end galleries, and now its takeover by big retailers. This painting of Franck’s neighbourhood is important testimony to the disappearing heritage of Yorkville and Toronto.
