Three Girls are images that recur in Surrey’s paintings in several different and equally important compositions and at various stages in his career. From their earliest incarnation in Surrey’s paintings and throughout his career when his compositions included these three girls one would be inclined to suggest that they are symbolic references to the Three Graces.
In Three Girls they are placed within a stage resonating a mood synonymous with among the best of the master; evening, lit only by neon and electric light, crosswalks implying zones where Surrey’s pedestrians are safe from the cars, which by his own acknowledgement were very disturbing to him. The amber light screams for the attention of the viewer. Mysteriously, a lone figure on a motorcycle is stopped below the cautionary signal. Three Girls is representative of an important body of Philip Surrey’s oeuvre and meriting both additional study and appreciation. -
