— Some 80 years since the completion of Summer, St. Urbain, it has maintained the freshness and vitality showcased by the best of Fred Hutchison’s paintings of the Charlevoix region. St. Urbain, a village north along the Gouffre River from Baie St. Paul, is iconised in paintings by Hutchison, Yvonne McKague Housser, Kathleen Daly & George Pepper (they built a small cottage in St. Urbain around 1931), Jean Palardy and his wife Jori Smith, A.Y. Jackson, Randolph Hewton, Albert Robinson, Hutchison’s good friend Clarence Gagnon, and other important artists sketching in Charlevoix in the day.
Hutchison was a student of William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal, studied in Paris at Académie Julian and the École Colarossi as well as, studied in New York City with William Chase as the master. For the greater part of his mature career (1905-1939) he taught at the College of the City of New York. A close friend of Clarence Gagnon, according to research for her MA thesis on F.W. Hutchison at Montreal’s Concordia University in 1982, Stephanie Thomas discovered that for more than 25 years, Hutchison rented the same cottage in Baie St. Paul for part of the summer and early fall.51 In 1922, Florence Gutteridge, visiting the Gagnons in Baie St. Paul, was introduced to Hutchison. They married several years later.
