Documentation
David Milne Jr. and David P. Silcox, David B. Milne: Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings Volume 1: 1882-1928, (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1998), no. 204.30, repr. p. 343, as “Private collection, Toronto”.As cited in David B. Milne: Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings Volume 1: 1882-1928, p. 343:
Primary Source: Duncan Catalogue EW-161, not titled, and draft as Log Cabin Ruins, NGC; Mount Riga Painting Note 28, NGC; Milne list 78, Ruin the Wood, MMFA.
M.R. 28. Watercolour. Dec 18th. Half sheet. Same subject as M.R. 27 [not titled, 204.29]. No snow on the ground, shadows not prominent, hence the different arrangement. The white tree shapes influenced by M.R. 22 [Reflections at Dart’s Lake II, 204.24]. Intended to use the color-spotted line of that picture in the old house but did not use it decidedly enough.
Mount Riga Painting Note 28
We have not seen the verso. See Abandoned Cabin I, 204.20, and Cabin in the Snow, 204.42, for other paintings of this subject and not titled, 204.29, for a note about a painted depiction of the same building.”
From cat. no. 204.29:
“The subject, a caved-in house near Mount Riga, was also depicted in Ruin in the Wood, 204.30, Abandoned Cabin I, 204.20, and Cabin in the Snow, 204.42.”
