This is one of Little's rare compositions which is not of urban content. It is noteworthy that this is the old wharf in La Malbaie proper and not the wharf which still exists and is active in Pointe au Pic, usually also referred to as La Malbaie. La Malbaie (Murray Bay), is a well known summer vacation resort area which became popular toward the end of the 19th Century. It was primarily affluent Montrealers who built summer properties there in the decades prior to air conditioning and had their families retreat from the heat and humidity of the city for the summer months.. La Malbaie did attract some affluent American home owners, most notably, President William Howard Taft. Le Manoir Richelieu, now a Fairmont Hotel, is a remnant of the distinguished heritage of the resort. As an aside only, in the summer after Little painted this work, I was on the bell staff of the Manoir Richelieu Hotel. Having spent a week there recently, almost everything has changed since 1970.
