This is a fine composition, most certainly painted at her favourite painting place, Lake Wonish. Located 8 miles from Morin Heights, Wonish was a property her father bought in 1911 and to which Anne retreated regularly. It inspired her work for 5 decades.
Anne Savage was a founding member of Montreal’s Beaver Hall Group of Artists and a member of the Canadian Group of Painters. She had been a student at the Art Association of Montreal and became a legendary art teacher at Baron Byng Highschool. In 1948 she became Assistant Art Supervisor for the Protestant School Board of Montreal and two years later was promoted to Supervisor.
A previous owner, Dr. Murphy, CM, was a medical doctor (ophthalmologist), an art collector, a president of The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and benefactor of that museum.
