There is nothing in this John Little painting of 1964 that one would recognize from that same perspective today. Nothing at all. Indeed, whereas urbanization of the last 10 or 15 years was inevitably going to result in high density of the urban core, arguably one might have thought that some consideration may have been given to the aesthetic virtues of the ‘neighbourhoods’ we are developing. We invite the viewer to go look at this street today. Over the last week in the newspapers and press the sad announcement of the passing of Blanche Lemco van Ginke in the Montreal Gazette read, “Saviour of Old Montreal dies at 98”. We have been reminded of”... her successful campaign along with her husband, famed architect Daniel (Sandy) van Ginkel, to quash a plan to run an elevated highway through the heart of Old Montreal in the late 1950s and early ‘60s.” We were reminded that this was “.. an era when highway development was king and concern for heritage buildings was ‘non-existent’”.
