Jean Palardy and his newly wedded wife, fellow artist Jori Smith spent a great part of the years 1930-1940 living in Charlevoix County. Jean Palardy was an artist, a filmmaker with the National Film Board of Canada, a historian and author of Les Meubles anciens du Canada français, an authoritative book on antique Quebec furniture. Jori Smith recollects those experiences in Charlevoix County 1930, published by Penumbra Press in 1998. In their Charlevoix years Palardy painted a rich legacy of paintings, most of them on this small “pochade” format.
A 1954 NFB film Palardy produced Artist in Montreal https://www.nfb.ca/film/artist_in_montreal/ is an important introduction to the Automatistes. -
