Foreword
- By Craig Klinkhoff
For decades, our family has hosted non-selling exhibitions that celebrate individual artists, groups, or themes, with the goal of engaging the broader public in a non-commercial setting. These exhibitions reflect our commitment to the study of art and to increasing access to privately owned works by some of Canada’s most celebrated artists. As a family art dealing business in its third generation, we are in a unique and privileged position to locate and present these outstanding privately owned works to the public. Our own deep personal connection to hockey adds an additional layer of enthusiasm in preparing this exhibition and we hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed putting it together.
Introduction
Despite the enduring popularity of hockey in Canada and in Canadian art, this exhibition is surprisingly original. Some artists, drawn to the popularity of hockey as a subject, find themselves confined to the hockey art market. From there, it can be difficult to transcend into broader markets. What distinguishes this exhibition is that the artists featured here achieved national or international recognition across various themes, with their rare depictions of hockey emerging from a genuine artistic pursuit, not solely from commercial demand.
In Canada, hockey is everywhere. It is played in back alleys, on neighborhood rinks, in community centers, and on city streets. For many of the artists in this exhibition, hockey was more than just a sport; it was a way to capture something more. Some used it as a lens for social commentary, while others were drawn to the energy of the game, the poetry of colour in the crowds or the rhythm of movement on the ice. Rather than being confined by the theme, these artists found ways to weave hockey into their broader artistic vision, using it as a means to explore composition, motion, and colour.
This exhibition celebrates artists who depicted hockey with depth, originality and with the utmost integrity. By bringing their works together for this special occasion, we invite you to see the game through their eyes and explore how each artist captured the same subject in strikingly different ways, driven by their own unique perspectives and motivations.
