Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Premières Important Retrospective of Montreal Artist John Fox, RCA (1927-2008)

Continuing a 37 year annual tradition of hosting educational retrospectives, a unique phenomenon among Canadian commercial art galleries, this fall Galerie Walter Klinkhoff will honour the legacy of renowned Canadian artist and Concordia University art teacher John Fox, RCA. The exhibition will feature important works on loan from private collections, as well as paintings never previously publicly exhibited, owned by Fox’s widow, distinguished art historian Sandra Paikowsky. Unusually – and, in fact, for the first time in the gallery’s history of hosting annual retrospectives – a limited number of the works will be available for purchase from the Estate.

Accompanying the John Fox show, the gallery has published an informative bilingual catalogue, by Judith Hayes, MA, analysing some of the artist’s works, and documenting the path of his 55-year career, from his days studying with Arthur Lismer and Goodridge Roberts, his time at London’s Slade School of Art, and his teaching at Concordia University to his summers in Venice, among the colours, light and architecture he adored.

Galerie Walter Klinkhoff has assembled a show with depth and breadth, including important works of art from Fox’s three distinct stylistic periods. Borrowing works from many of their clients as well as from other collectors, the gallery is exhibiting the dynamic range of Fox’s works; representational, soft geometric abstracts, and his final phase – referred to as his “refiguration” period.
