Stanley Cosgrove is a painter of the still life, the human figure and the landscape. On my occasional visits from the mid 1970s to his home in Hudson, Quebec or more often his loft in Old Montreal, he reminded me that he painted his landscapes in all of their seasons. Cosgrove also has a versatility in medium, excelling equally in painting in oils as charcoal.
Cosgrove’s development in style and perhaps content, too, resolves its way through the cubism of Georges Braque en route to one which is uniquely “Cosgrove”.
His oeuvre in still life is often composed from the same utilitarian and culinary objects, bowls, plates, pitchers, stemware, table napkins, as well as fruit including lemons and grapes masterfully introduced not as kitchen or food items but as sculptural objects. With them, Cosgrove creates a balance and a contemplative harmony in paint. Stanley Cosgrove is Canada’s Giorgio Morandi, the latter referred to by some as Italy’s greatest artist.
