— In the John Little. City Life from 1951 publication we printed a few years ago now, we wrote of Little’s interest in the integrity of one of downtown Montreal’s prestigious terrace properties, The Prince of Wales Terrace and the architectural horrors that replaced it. This work is painted in 1997 from a series of 1957 drawings. Note that with the prominent tree how Little has obfuscated some of what for the artist is development incongruous with the neighbourhood. Reading Little’s notes about the public works crew doing sewer repairs as he did his 1957 drawings, those of us who have either lived or worked in the area of McTavish and Sherbrooke streets will remark that it is almost an annual occurrence that work is being conducted on those sewer pipes. The reservoir up McTavish has caused all kinds of havoc below, flooding even when it was originally built in 1852. -
