— In a large and important collection of Lawren Harris paintings that we offered for sale and sold in 2017, we had a sister painting to Autumn Woodland accompanied by a description that Charlie Hill researched for us. Hill wrote that in the early 1920s Harris exhibited several Woods Interiors or Autumn Woods and that “... these numerous studies of wood interiors were only worked up into one canvas, Autumn Algoma of 1920 in the collection of Victoria College at the University of Toronto…”
One memorable line in Hill’s text reads, "It is a hymn of praise to the colour and light of the northern autumn landscape"
