Montreal, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., Clarence Gagnon Retrospective Exhibition, September 1975, no. 26.6.In “Jour de boucherie, Baie-Saint-Paul,” circa 1923 (#8), the glowing fire echoes the pig's blood on the snow on a bitterly cold day. This unique rustic scene reminds us that while Gagnon was a keen observer of nature far from modernity and industrialization, he was just as close an observer of people, as later confirmed so brilliantly by his illustrations for Louis Hémon's novel Maria Chapdelaine.
