Au lutin qui bouffe is a fine and rare Montreal urban scene by Lorne Bouchard, who was known primarily as a landscape painter. Lorne was in fact highly versatile in his subject matter which included the still life, illustrations (for Macleans Magazine and other publications), and the occasional figure study. The scene here is a streetscape painted in the Plateau area of Montreal featuring the legendary restaurant Au Lutin Qui Bouffe. The restaurant was a popular venue for fine dining and had an unusual feature of a piglet, a live piglet, brought to one’s table. For artists the importance of the restaurant is that it had an art gallery inside the entrance, where among others, Paul Vanier Beaulieu had an exhibition.
