Dacre is about 25 km west of Renfrew, and 120 km west of Ottawa.
This is a vigorously painted composition of a creek near Dacre in the Ottawa Valley. At this age and stage in his career. Soon after Dr. Jackson’s move to Manotick in 1955, where his niece Geneva lived nearby, Walter Klinkhoff began to visit him more regularly than he had previously. “A.Y. was at the time still a man of great energy and full of enthusiasm. Arriving early one day for an appointment and finding the house locked, I sat down to wait and soon saw a man carrying two huge parcels up the hill at a tremendous pace. It looked a little like A.Y. but I said to myself that this must surely be a young man. It turned out to be A.Y. alright and when I told him why I had ruled out this possibility he said he was just a young fellow anyway. ” [1]
In his own words, Jackson wrote, “Before I moved to Manotick I had become familiar with the Gatineau country north of Ottawa where I had sketched with Maurice Haycock and Ralph Burton. I had found some interesting places to paint, rocky hills rising out of the farmlands, rivers lakes, and old settlements all quite close of Ottawa. So I left the Studio Building with few regrets.” [2]
As he evidenced by our painting These “interesting places to paint”, sketching trips, accompanied by fellow artists Ralph Burton or Maurice Haycock as both companionship as well as driver, included Dacre, Calabogie, Eganville, other stimulating areas easily accessible from Manotick and then later when he moved into Ottawa proper.
