Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., catalogue for Sarah Robertson Retrospective Exhibition (Montreal: Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., 1991), unpaginated, reproduced in b&w.Old House, Vermont is one of 4 paintings by Sarah Robertson illustrated in our Sarah Robertson Retrospective organized and hosted by our original family gallery, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff, in 1991. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a composition by Sarah Robertson. She was a most significant artist of her day whose body of work, due to a variety of unfortunate circumstances, is extremely limited in quantity. Sarah Robertson was one of the most influential artists among the core group of women commonly known as the Beaver Hall Group. Her personal struggles handicapping Robertson’s pursuit of painting are well described in the important and original research Barbara Meadowcroft provided for the Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Sarah Robertson Retrospective Exhibition in 1991. As Barbara wrote, “For nearly thirty years Sarah enjoyed the friendship and support of Prudence Heward. The two were described as inseparable.” [1] Of Sarah Robertson, Meadowcroft deferred to “Notes from Lectures on Canadian Women Artists” where Anne Savage wrote of Sarah Robertson and her paintings, “Apparently, delicate and frail- but she could hit the bull’s eye every time with a resounding crack.” [2]
