Heffel Fine Art Auction House. The effect of the setting sun on his landscape and the rolling clouds above at Percé Rock in the Gaspé served to inspire Richard to great heights in this composition. Richard has perched himself somewhere above Cap Blanc it seems and was looking northward towards the Percé Rock, or more importantly for the artist, toward the setting sun and the artistry it suggested to him.
Rene Richard commented that his subject matter in Baie St Paul and certainly with reference to the more picturesque scenes like ours of the Gaspé looking toward Percé Rock were more calm than when he was painting more hostile countryside. He related this euphemistically; “ Now, I always work but more calmly. In the West, it was different, I had already sketched a hunter who was skinning a fox! One had to have a solid heart. I always work, yes. You see, a painter's work, it needs to be pursued!" (La Presse Montreal Jan 26 1963 interview with C. Jasmin.)
