Selling to Alan Klinkhoff Gallery

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
  1. Do you buy/consign works from across Canada?

The Alan Klinkhoff Gallery acquires and sells fine art across Canada and around the world. With our gallery team and the benefit of contemporary communications we are able facilitate the efficient and safe transportation of fine art sold by or consigned to Alan Klinkhoff Gallery.

Within Canada there are regularly scheduled and reliable fine art transport companies traveling east to west and back, weekly between Toronto and Montreal. NYC from Toronto and Montreal is a regularly scheduled destination also served by fine art transporters. On or off the scheduled trucking grid, nationally and internationally, we use  high quality, safe and efficient carriers by air.

For the convenience of our clients selling or consigning works of art to us, if crating facilities are unavailable in their region or simply a nuisance to pursue, the Alan Klinkhoff Gallery can send to the client the appropriate tailor made crate or box in which are any supplies necessary for the packaging of the artwork and its safe return to us. Our team at Alan Klinkhoff Gallery is able to coordinate waybills and pick up from the client. We attempt to make the transaction as easy as is possible for our client.

  1. What is the commission structure?

Our terms are usually that the consignor is agreeing to a net price to which we are permitted to add a profit and our expenses, including maintenance charges (e.g. cleaning and framing if necessary). The projected profit margin is contingent on the value of the work of art, on a sliding scale from 7% for the highest value works up to 30% for the more modestly priced works.

  1. Four reasons you should pick Alan Klinkhoff Gallery over the competition (other galleries/an auction house).

#1. With  our “fixed price” galleries in Canada’s two largest cities and online at klinkhoff.ca we we offer a platform where we project maximizing your value in the sale of high value fine art.

#2.  We offer a financial efficiency for both buyers and sellers of high value fine art. Our low aggregate commissions and fees are attractive to all stakeholders.

#3. We have a very high percentage of closing sales at our projected prices.

#4. Our business transactions are confidential. Buyers and sellers of the Alan Klinkhoff Gallery are secure in the knowledge that all our financial dealings will be handled with the utmost discretion.

  1. What is the difference between selling directly to the gallery and consigning a work?

One is a consignment arrangement.

With works on consignment, we ask for a period of time, generally 9 months, during which we have the exclusive right to offer the work for sale. It need be noted that sometimes it may even take 6-8 weeks between the time we receive the work of art and the time it is ready to be shown and marketed for sale. The work of art is offered actively for sale in our gallery and at www.klinkhoff.ca  and paid for when the work is sold by us to a client. In the remote eventuality that the work is unsold it is returned to the owner. Our success rate for selling on consignment is 90%.

The second option sometimes available to sellers of important fine art is an outright sale to Alan Klinkhoff Gallery. In this case we are taking a financial risk that our financial projection is one that we can realize and are making the financial investment in its ownership. While we are often agreeable to purchasing outright for resale works of art of a particularly fine quality, we expect that our financial risk be remunerated at a level greater than on a consignment basis.

  1. When and how will I be paid for my consignment?

The consignor will be paid within 7 days after sale and settlement is received.
