Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) was an important French artist, best known for his collaboration with Henri Matisse and André Derain at the outset of Fauvism. From that colorful approach, he evolved towards a more limited color palette, characterized by dramatic contrasts of light and dark, described with expressive, sweeping brushwork. This evolution is typified by the painting we are offering here.
