Georges Mathieu was a pioneer of Lyrical Abstraction. Mathieu emphasized speed, spontaneity, and emotion in his work. His spontaneity is underlined by the suggestion that Mathieu painted this spontaneously for Madeleine Boyer who at the time of its painting was the partner of Dr Max Stern, owner of Montreal’s Dominion Gallery with whom Mathieu was exhibiting.
This exquisite and small watercolour features his dynamic black ink strokes intersecting in a burst of energy, anchored by a bold red mark, hallmarks of his expressive, calligraphic style.
