William Winter

William Winter was born in Winnipeg in 1909. Described as a romantic painter of urban life, he often enjoyed capturing people in their ordinary pursuits, with a particular interest in children and the ballet.

His paintings have been acquired by The National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Vancouver Art Gallery and The National Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. His paintings can also be found in many private collections.

Winter painted murals for the Oshawa Public Library, Canadian Pacific Railway, Standard Iron and Steel Company of Toronto and the City of Winnipeg for the Seagram Collection.

Winter studied at the Winnipeg School of Art under L.L. Fitzgerald, Franz Johnston and others. In 1937, he moved to Toronto, where he became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy, Canadian Group of Painters, Ontario Society of Artists and the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour.

William Winter passed away on March 10, 1996.
