Jean McEwen is a key figure in the canon of modernism in Canadian art. His paintings featuring red fields with a black central form are the most recognizable of his career. The luminosity achieved in this colour palette and design results in a particularly compelling composition and is considered an important example of post-World War II contemporary art. La Victoire de Sardanapale #2 is a rare opportunity to acquire a McEwen of this desirability, as well as one in excellent restorative condition.
The painting was acquired from Galerie Agnes Lefort in 1967, one year after it was painted, and has been in the family of the original owner until now.
